Fibroid Treatment Without Surgery: A Practical Guide for Women Living in the UAE

Written by the IRCC Pakistan editorial team | Medically reviewed by Dr. Shahbaz Ahmed Qazi, Interventional Radiologist | Last updated: October 2026

Quick answer: Yes, many fibroids can be treated without surgery. The main option is uterine fibroid embolization (UFE), where an interventional radiologist blocks the blood supply to the fibroids through a small puncture in the wrist or groin. The fibroids shrink over the following months, heavy bleeding usually settles, and the uterus stays in place. Most women go home within a day and are back to light routine in one to two weeks.

If you live in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or anywhere else in the Emirates, there is a good chance you have already seen a gynecologist about your fibroids. Often the advice is surgery: a myomectomy to cut the fibroids out, or a hysterectomy to remove the uterus. For a woman with a job, children and a visa to keep in order, that can mean weeks off work and a long recovery away from family.

This guide explains the non-surgical route in plain language. We cover who it suits, what the evidence says, what recovery looks like, and why a growing number of women from the UAE choose to have it done in Pakistan.

What are fibroids, and when do they need treatment?

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths of muscle tissue in the wall of the uterus. They are very common, especially in women in their thirties and forties, and many women carry them for years without knowing.

Treatment is usually considered when fibroids start to affect daily life. The signs we hear about most from patients are:

  • Very heavy or long periods, sometimes with clots or flooding
  • Low iron or anemia that keeps coming back despite tablets
  • A feeling of pressure or fullness in the lower belly
  • Needing to pass urine often, or constipation from pressure on the bladder or bowel
  • Pain during periods or during intercourse
  • A swollen abdomen that looks like early pregnancy

If your fibroids are small and cause no trouble, you may not need any treatment at all. Size alone is not the deciding factor. How you feel is.

Can fibroids be removed without surgery?

Strictly speaking, embolization does not remove fibroids. It cuts off their blood supply so they shrink and soften inside the body. For most women the result that matters, fewer symptoms, is the same.

Here is how the main options compare:

OptionHow it worksTypical hospital stayKeeps the uterus?
Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE)Tiny particles block the arteries feeding the fibroids through a catheterSame day or one nightYes
MyomectomySurgeon cuts out the fibroids through the abdomen or by keyhole1 to 4 nightsYes
HysterectomyUterus is removed completely2 to 5 nightsNo
MedicinesHormonal tablets or injections to control bleeding or shrink fibroids for a whileNoneYes (symptoms often return when stopped)

How uterine fibroid embolization works, step by step

UFE is performed by an interventional radiologist, a doctor trained to treat conditions from inside the blood vessels using live X-ray and ultrasound images. Here is what normally happens:

  1. Before the procedure, you have a pelvic MRI or ultrasound so the doctor can see the size, number and position of the fibroids.
  2. On the day, you are awake but given sedation and local anesthetic. There is no general anesthetic in most cases.
  3. A thin tube (catheter) is passed through a small puncture in the wrist or groin and guided to the uterine arteries.
  4. Very small particles are released to block the vessels that feed the fibroids. Normal uterine tissue keeps its blood supply from other vessels.
  5. The procedure usually takes 45 to 90 minutes. There are no stitches, only a small dressing.

Cramping is expected for the first day or two and is managed with pain relief. Some women also feel tired or slightly feverish for a few days. Doctors call this post-embolization syndrome, and it settles on its own.

UFE vs myomectomy: what the research actually says

We would rather give you the honest picture than a sales pitch. The best-known study on this question is the FEMME trial, run across 29 hospitals in the UK with 254 women who had symptomatic fibroids.

  • At two years, women who had myomectomy reported somewhat better fibroid-related quality of life than those who had embolization.
  • By four years, that difference had narrowed and was no longer statistically significant.
  • Both groups saw similar improvement in heavy bleeding.
  • The study found no consistent difference between the two treatments in markers of ovarian reserve.

In the UK, NICE guidance on heavy menstrual bleeding lists uterine artery embolization as one of the treatments women with larger fibroids should be offered, alongside surgery. In short, embolization is a recognized, evidence-based option, not an experimental one. The right choice depends on your fibroids and your plans, especially around pregnancy.

Who is a good candidate, and who is not?

UFE tends to suit women who:

  • Have symptoms from one or several fibroids, including large ones
  • Want to keep their uterus
  • Want to avoid general anesthetic or a cut on the abdomen
  • Cannot take long leave from work

It may not be the first choice if you are pregnant, have an active pelvic infection, have a suspected cancer, or if a single fibroid hangs on a thin stalk. If you are actively planning a pregnancy soon, discuss this openly with both your gynecologist and the interventional radiologist. Some women in this group are better served by myomectomy.

Recovery: what the first few weeks look like

Time after UFEWhat most women experience
Day 1 to 2Cramping, managed with pain relief. Most women go home the same day or the next morning.
Day 3 to 7Tiredness and mild discomfort. Short walks and rest at home or at your hotel.
Week 1 to 2Back to desk work and light routine for most women.
Month 3Periods are usually noticeably lighter. A follow-up scan may be advised.
Month 6 to 12Fibroids continue to shrink. Pressure symptoms keep improving.

For patients flying back to the UAE, we usually suggest planning to stay in Pakistan for around five to seven days after the procedure. The exact time depends on your case and is confirmed after review.

How much does fibroid embolization cost: UAE vs Pakistan

Cost is one of the main reasons women in the UAE look at treatment in Pakistan, especially if insurance does not cover the procedure or the excess is high. Based on IRCC's own indicative estimates:

ProcedureEstimated cost in PakistanEstimated cost in UAE
Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE)Around AED 8,000Around AED 29,000

These are planning figures, not a quote. Your final cost depends on the number and size of fibroids, the tests you need, and how long you stay. Please ask for a written estimate after your case review, and add flights and accommodation when you compare. For a breakdown of what goes into the price, read our guide on what affects uterine fibroid treatment cost in Pakistan.

Planning treatment in Pakistan from Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah

Flights from the main UAE airports to Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad are short, usually two to three and a half hours. Many of our UAE patients are overseas Pakistanis who prefer recovering near family, but you do not need to be Pakistani to be treated.

A simple way to plan:

  1. Send your recent ultrasound or MRI report, blood tests and any previous treatment notes for review.
  2. Speak with the interventional radiologist by phone or video and ask your questions.
  3. If UFE suits you, agree the date, city and estimated cost before booking flights.
  4. Bring all original reports and a list of current medicines.
  5. Arrange follow-up in the UAE with your gynecologist, and keep the IRCC team updated with your three-month scan.

Questions to ask any doctor before fibroid treatment

  • Are my symptoms definitely caused by the fibroids, or could something else be involved, such as adenomyosis?
  • Which treatments are realistic for my fibroid size and position?
  • How would each option affect my chances of pregnancy?
  • How many of these procedures do you perform each year?
  • What follow-up will I need, and can it be done back in the UAE?

Frequently asked questions

Is fibroid embolization painful?

The procedure itself is done under sedation and local anesthetic, so most women feel pressure rather than pain. Cramping in the first 24 to 48 hours is normal and is controlled with medication.

Do fibroids come back after embolization?

Treated fibroids rarely grow back, but new fibroids can still form over time, as they can after myomectomy. Some women need a further procedure years later.

Can I get pregnant after UFE?

Pregnancies after UFE are reported, and the FEMME trial found no consistent effect on ovarian reserve markers. Still, if pregnancy is a near-term goal, discuss myomectomy as well so you can choose with full information.

Will my UAE insurance cover treatment in Pakistan?

Coverage varies by policy. Some plans do not cover treatment abroad, while others reimburse part of the cost. Check with your insurer before you travel and ask IRCC for an itemised invoice.

How long should I stay in Pakistan?

Most patients plan for five to seven days in total. This allows time for pre-procedure checks, the procedure, and a short recovery before flying.

Can I send my reports from the UAE first?

Yes. A remote case review is the first step. Share your reports through the form on our UAE patients page or on WhatsApp, and the team will tell you whether UFE looks suitable before you make any travel plans.
